Sherry,
I am one of the Directors of volunteers at Palm Valley Church in Goodyear, AZ, along with Jillayne Payne.
Your blog site had been passed on to me by Derrick Logan, our Worship Director. Then yesterday, our Pastor, Greg Rohlinger, informed Jillayne and I that you and your husband would be visiting our church this weekend, and meeting with us on Monday. We have been doing this at Palm Valley for 2 years now, and are modeled after Fellowship Church. We have come to a place where we are now re-assessing our structure and are really looking forward to chatting with you and learning how you structure and generally handle your Volunteer Ministry. I wish you safe travels and look forward to meeting you this weekend.

Sherry,
I lead our various volunteer teams. What are the most effective ways you are recruiting volunteers these days? How many of your volunteers recruit other volunters? Two questions, I know, but look forward to your answers.

Nancy, I look forward to meeting you and hearing more about what God is doing there. See you soon.
Great question, Ryan. The main avenue for receiving volunteer interests at this time is through Membership class. There is a part of the class where serving in the church is discussed and the volunteer opportunities are listed in the back of the membership book. They fill in the team that they would like to try out and it is passed on to me. Now, while we get many interests this way we also get alot that say “unsure” and many that just filled in the blank because there was a blank. We call all the interests that we recive and getting in touch with them all is sometimes a struggle. We will always try every way we have to get in touch with them. I am in the process of planning a different avenue for receiving interest. Effectivness is found in the personal contact and the communication of the vision behind serving. I want individuals to understand why God has called us to serve and build up the church, to serve because they have joy in doing so not because they feel it is their duty. I will post about this planning progress and let you know how it goes.
We encourage all of our volunteers to invite others to come and serve with them. Our church grows because people invite people and our volunteer ministry works the same way. The energy and excitement that our volunteers have is contagious and spreading. I encourage the volunteers to share their joy with others and tell their story of getting involved and how it’s impacted their life. I cannot tell you exactly how many we have inviting people but I can tell you I see it happening every week. We have some of our Home Groups that come and serve together to introduce serving to those not active. Hope this answered your questions.
If you’d like to talk further about this feel free to post again or give me a call. Thank you for your question.
Thanks for the response Sherry. Creating a culture of inviting freinds to serve is key!
